Pho 88

Before a gig at the Enmore the other night, Boyfriend and I were looking for a cheap easy eat. We walked past Pho88 which looked busy enough – always a good sign.

We walked in and were given a table straight away. Once we sat down, we were provided with menus. There wasn’t really any need, Boyfriend always ends up with Bun and me, Pho. I went crispy chicken pho that night.

Pho88 is also BYO! If we knew this before walking in, we would have stopped at the bottle-o on the way.

Boyfriend's Bun
Food was really quick to come out.

Boyfriend was pretty impressed with his Bun, was a pretty big serving.

A crispy chicken leg with sauce came out on a plate for me, beansprouts and chili on another plate and a big bowl of Pho.

You can get pho in regular or large serves. The regular serve was enough for me.
Pho was as good as any I had had previously and chicken was yummo and crispy, just the way I like it!

My Crispy Chicken

Pho!
Would definitely recommend if you are in the area and looking for a cheap, quick or  BYO night.

The Pie Tin

Boyfriend and I suffer from quite a sweet tooth. We keep seeing these pics of this place called The Pie Tin and a while ago, we put it on our mental list of places to make sure we try out.

After lunch and a couple of bevvies in Newtown yesterday, we got the usual after meal craving for something sweet.

Light Bulb! We remembered that The Pie Tin is in Newtown and it happened to be only a couple of streets away from where we were.

On walking in, it has quite a cosy feel to it. There's a big comunal table in the middle and a few two seater tables.

The first display cabinet we walk past is full of all the sweet pies. Straight away my eyes are pulled to the ginormous beast that is the 'Apple Pie that ate Newtown'... I had to have me some of that!
Boyfriend went straight to the Malteser pie and our friends to the Belgian White Choc and Rocky Road and the well loved classic, Sticky Date.

After 5 minutes of being table creeps, a couple seats freed up so we could sit down.

Then our number got called... Ok, so, if we knew the slices of pie were going to be this big there is no way we would have ordered one each!
First to come out is the Apple Pie that ate Newtown. I don't know how to describe how big this slice was. Let's just say it is well enough for two people...
And it is delicious!                   There is SO many layers of apple, perfectly flavoured and each cooked through to perfection. Soft but still firm...   With the addition of a scoop of vanilla ice cream, oh em gee,  take me back!!

After demolishing the apple pie there wasn't much room left for Boyfriends slice of malteser pie. So we took that home for dessert later that night. When we finally had room to eat it, it was gone in minutes! So light and creamy, beautiful chocolate flavour all the way through. The base a nice, rich chocolate with the perfect crunch.

While we were busy eating our apple pie, our friends devoured their Sticky Date and Belgian White Choc. They're thinking this place is the new Go To for birthday cakes! You can grab a whole pie from $39 - $49.

Next time we head there (yes, there will be a next time) I'd definitely try a savoury pie. Everyone around us had them and they smelt SO good. And maybe just one slice of a different sweet pie to share... Or on second thoughts,  maybe one each... you can always get left overs to take away!

Marly Kitchen, Marlborough Hotel

Waking up to a beautiful sunny winters day yesterday, we thought what better way to spend it than with a pub lunch and a few Sunday bevvies.

We headed into Newtown, and found a car spot right across from the Marlborough Hotel. Score! This is when we entered the Marly Kitchen.

The Marly Kitchen is a recent renovation of the Marlborough hotel and I love it. The decor is great and it has the feel of a nice little garden but indoors. There is an outdoors area, but even though the sun was out, that damn winter chill was still in the air. So we stuck to indoors.

Looking through the menu, they have a great variety. One of my friends that I was with happens to be a Vego and she was pretty happy with the vegetarian selection. She was particularly intrigued by the vegetarian schnitzel!

I myself, had heard that this place serves up chicken and waffles. Fried chicken, YUM! Waffles, YUM!

They have a few other savoury combos with waffles, but I couldn't go past trying the fried chicken first. Now, just waiting for the Boys to make a decision, they finally decide on the half chicken.

We order at the bar and are told it's a 20 minute wait on the half chickens, because they are grilled and cooked to perfection - looking forward to this!
And really, a 20 minute wait is nothing when you're chilling back with a Sunday cider in hand.

The food comes out, and everyone is pretty impressed upon sight. The Boys chickens are a nice, golden colour while still looking juicy, mmmm...
The vegetarian schnitzel is HUGE (I didn’t catch a pic of this before it was demolished, soz!) and the chicken and waffles look deliciously crisp and fried, but are just a bit small compared to everyone elses’s dishes (sad face). But for $8 a pop, not complaining!

On first mouthfuls, all anyone can say is, ‘How good is that slaw?!’… That was the first to go on everyone’s plate.

Just as we thought the chicken was tender and juicy, potatoes cooked to perfection and just the perfect amount of gravy for the whole plate.

Our Vego friend was more than pleased with the schnitzel, though after leaving we found ourselves wondering what it was actually made from and wish we had of asked the staff. I will be returning so will need to remember to do that - Watch this space!

The buttermilk fried chicken was deliciously fried to the perfect crunch. The waffle, I wanted more! And it was just a little crisp, for my taste. But drenched in gravy, I still enjoyed every bite!

Wednesday night is Waffle Night at the Marly Kitchen. All waffles are $4, I'd definitely recommend hitting it up.

There are some other pretty cool dishes on the menu I'd like to try out.. the burgers coming out looked pretty good and they all seemed to come with an abundance of chips!

The Nacho Fries sound absolutely amaze - though, I'm feeling this is a dish best shared. You can also get a chip sambo or sanga (whichever is your preferred terminology). This would def be on the cards on a friday night after work drinking sesh.

And for those who like the classics, you can also get a backyard platter which comes with diced cheddar, cabanossi, french onion dips and jatz. Bringing back bbq memories?..
